BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The President and CEO of Eversource wrote a letter to President Biden on Thursday explaining his concerns about a gas shortage in New England that could cause power outages this winter.

Joseph Nolan, Eversource CEO, wrote to President Biden asking him to direct the Secretary of Energy to make a plan that ensures New England will be ready in the case of extreme weather this winter. If no action takes place, Nolan said a possible power outage could happen from the lack of natural gas.

"As both an energy company CEO and a lifelong New Englander, I am deeply concerned about the potentially severe impact a winter energy shortfall would have on the people and businesses of this region," Nolan said.

In the letter, Nolan writes that because of the war in Ukraine, the foreign-sourced LNG routinely supplied to Everett is not available in the amounts needed for New England this winter.

"I respectfully urge you, Mr. President, to employ the emergency powers of the federal government to take all steps to ensure that adequate fuel resources will be available in the event of severe weather conditions in New England this winter," he said.

He included multiple emergency action suggestions the federal government could impose to help maintain New England's gas supply this winter.

"Many of the solutions require advance planning because they may require actions by regulators, finding new resources, chartering vessels, arranging for additional fuel deliveries, and other yet to be identified extraordinary actions," Nolan said.

New Englanders are already being warned of high rates to heat their homes this winter season.
