A Milford middle school was evacuated and several students were sent to the hospital on Wednesday after a student sprayed mace in the lobby, Superintendent Kevin McIntyre said in a statement.

Students at Stacy Middle School were evacuated and bussed home about an hour late after the incident. Seven students and staff members were in the area when the mace was sprayed and were sent to the hospital for evaluation.

"At the time of the incident, we were not certain what the substance was and Milford Police, Fire, and emergency vehicles were dispatched to the school. The school was evacuated as a precautionary measure," Superintendent McIntyre said.

Milford Police said they were working to reunite students with their parents. An organized dismissal took place at Memorial Elementary School.

Police said hazmat was on the scene.
