New Englanders Could Catch A Glimpse Of Five Planets Aligning At Sunset

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — New Englanders may have a chance to see the planets aligning in an unusual celestial event this week.

Jupiter, Mars, Venus, Mercury, and Uranus will be aligning giving stargazers a chance to see planets that are typically more difficult to see.

Silas Laycock, University of Massachusetts Lowell astronomer, said the five planets will be visible around sunset over the next few days. Laycock recommends looking for the brighter planets and finding the line connecting them to see the fainter ones.

"High up in the sky you would see Mars, fairly close to it would be the crescent moon, and if you follow close to it in kind of a straight line going towards the west you would see Venus shining brightly high above the horizon," Laycock told WBZ's Shari Small. "Going down right close to the horizon you would then pick up Jupiter."

On March 27, Jupiter will pass by Mercury and Venus will be passing by Uranus.

"Venus will be passing by Uranus which is also a faint and difficult-to-see planet but because it's going to be right next to the bright planet Venus it will be relatively easy to find where it is in the sky," Laycock said.

He recommends using a pair of binoculars or a small telescope to better your chances of seeing the planets align.
