Wareham Fisherman Dies After Being Hit By Train, Pushed In Water Off Bridge

WAREHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A fisherman is dead after being hit by a train on a railroad bridge in Wareham on Thursday afternoon.

The person was fishing on the bridge in the center of town at the intersection of Main Street and Sandwich Road when a train came and struck them causing them to fall into the water below, Wareham Fire Department said.

"We received a report of a person struck by a train, on arrival, bystanders reported that the person was struck by the train and thrown in the water," Wareham Assistant Fire Chief Patrick Haskell told WBZ's Tim Dunn.

Haskell said when first responders arrived they couldn't see the person since it was an outgoing tide, causing the current to move the person quickly.

People further down the road were able to spot the person and they were pulled from the water, officials said.

The person was transported to Tobey Hospital where they were pronounced dead.
