ROXBURY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A West Roxbury man has claimed a winning lottery ticket just 11 days before it expires.

John Butler is $100,000 richer after finding a winning lottery ticket he had purchased nearly a year before. The ticket was announced as the winner in the March 17, 2022 drawing and had to be claimed in a year.

Bulter told the Massachusetts Lottery that his wife told him about seeing an unclaimed ticket coming up on its expiration date on the news. He then went to look through old tickets at his home and found the winning ticket.

“We are thrilled that Mr. Butler’s wife saw the Lottery announcement in the news about the unclaimed ticket! What a great reminder to keep your tickets in a safe place and always make sure to check them,” State Treasurer Deborah B. Goldberg, chair of the Massachusetts State Lottery Commission, said in a statement. “You will never know when you might be as lucky as the Butlers."

He had purchased the ticket before going on a trip to Florida last year and placed it in a drawer, forgetting to check it.

The winning ticket was purchased at a Star Market in Dedham.
