MARBLEHEAD, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) — Marblehead's fire chief put on his cap and gown to celebrate after achieving his 30-year-old dream.

Fire Chief Jason Gilliland went back to school after 30 years and received a bachelor's degree in Fire Science from Salem State University. He had always wanted to go back to school and get a degree but between his family, promotions, and work, life got in the way.

"Certainly at 58, 59 years old now it was a humbling experience to go back to school at that age," Gilliland told WBZ's Brooke McCarthy.

During the pandemic, Gilliland was able to rekindle his dreams.

"To me it was a huge sense of accomplishment and I'm glad I did it," said Gilliland.

Chief Gilliland spent the last few years hitting the books and graduated with honors from Salem State. He thanks his wife, kids, and tutors, for encouraging him and believing in him every step of the way.
