NEWTON (WBZ-AM) -- Tuesday night's heavy wind and rain brought a large tree crashing through the roof of a Newton home.
Nobody was hurt, but the house on the corner of Brentwood and Greenlawn Avenues had extensive damage to its side and rear, as well as a huge hole in the roof.
National Weather Service meteorologist Hayden Frank told WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Ben Parker that when you put water and wind together, it can cause problems.
"When you get the rain especially like it was last night, heavy, you get saturated ground, so that makes it easier for the wind to, say, knock down some trees that have been weakened by prior storms," he said.
Frank said that, though most leaves are down by now, though some aren't--and that helped lead to some trees coming down.
"If this was in October, the damage would have been much worse," he said. "But because it's still early December, you do have dead leaves that tend to sometimes stick around on some trees, so that can cause increased issues."
There were gusts of up to 40 mph in Newton Tuesday night--as well as a 62 mph gust recorded on Blue Hill.
