WORCESTER (WBZ-AM) -- The demolition crews are setting up--and stopping them from taking down the historic Notre Dame Cathedral in Worcester will seemingly take nothing less than a miracle.

Worcester's City Council has gotten behind a last-ditch effort to save the 89-year-old cathedral, which closed its doors in 2007.

Supporters at City Hall Tuesday night secured a vote by the council to give the City Manager the authority to speak with developer City Square Two to see if there's anything that could be done to repurpose the massive, neo-Romanesque stone structure.

But a spokesperson for City Square Two says the developer has already looked for years at another option--so it would seem that the fate of the cathedral could now be measured in days.
