CHELSEA (WBZ-AM) -- The man wanted in the Monday night stabbing of a waitress in Chelsea was arrested in Maryland Thursday morning.
Gerardo Reyes Menjivar, 36 of Lynn, was taken into custody by the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force in Beltsville, Maryland.
He is charged with assault to murder.
Police said he walked out of Las Pupusas Del Chino restaurant on Blossom Street in Chelsea around 11 p.m. Monday without paying his bill.
When a waitress followed him out to confront him, police said Menjivar slashed her neck and hand with a knife before driving off.
The waitress is now recovering at home after being treated at a local hospital.
Chelsea Police put out a nation-wide BOLO alert for Menjivar and his vehicle, leading to his capture.
"Today after a successful nationwide law enforcement effort, we placed a violent individual into custody and our community is safer," Chelsea Police Chief Brian Kyes said in a release. "I thank the many agencies involved that worked in unison with our department to apprehend Menjivar."
The Suffolk DA's office is working on bringing him back to Massachusetts. In the meantime, Menjivar will be held in Maryland as a fugitive from justice.
