BOSTON (WBZ-AM) — The death toll is continuing to climb after a tsunami hit Indonesia’s Sunda Strait — between the Java and Sumatra islands — Saturday. At least 222 people were killed and more than 800 were injured.

The eruption of the Anak Krakatau volcanic island triggered the disaster, according to the Associated Press.

WBZ NewsRadio1030’s Bill Marcus spoke with actor and teacher Michael Jones, of New Brunswick, N.J., who is on Lombok Island — east of Anak Krakatau.

“News like this, of the tsunami hitting, is just kind of revamping all those anxieties that are happening, and happening all throughout Indonesia,” Jones said.

Jones said there have been small earthquakes over the last couple of days. Earthquakes were also reported in Indonesia over the summer.

“I didn’t even really feel it. And what I noticed is that people were all running,” Jones said.

Jones — who is trained in the United States as a first responder — said he intends to help with cleanup in Lombok.
