The governor said in a press conference Wednesday afternoon that the state had a $3.9 billion budget surplus through May, beating its revenue predictions by about 15%.

The administration is proposing a tax holiday with the extra money that would run through the entire months of August and September. Gov. Baker said the tax holiday would return $900 million to the taxpayers in total.

State lawmakers would still need to pass the extended tax holiday into law, and the governor urged them to do so on Wednesday.

"We know the last year has been incredibly difficult for so many people here in the Commonwealth, and for our small businesses... we have a long way to go...after this very tough year, our taxpayers and our small businesses deserve a break, " he said. He thanked federal emergency relief funds, the state legislature, and state residents for the extra funds.

A two-day Sales Tax Holiday weekend is already part of state law, and will fall on August 14 and 15 this year.
