BOSTON (WBZNewsRadio) - A new survey from the Massachusetts Business Roundtable finds Bay State employers see the future of work as a hybrid affair.

Researchers looked at 51 companies in the commonwealth in the last two months, asking questions about hiring and retaining staff long-term.

Half of those surveyed companies, the largest group, said employees are working remotely, some days in-office, some days at-home.

Around one in five companies said all or most of their workforce is still remote -- just a year ago, four out of five companies were primarily virtual. And as businesses continue to work their way out of the pandemic, around a fourth now say most or all employees are back in-person.

When it comes to plans for the future, only 6% of companies said they plan to stay remote long term, but 68% a hybrid model will be their "new normal."

The survey also looked at plans to retain and attract new employees. Companies reported plans for more flexible working hours, hybrid-work tools, mental health and wellness programs, as well as higher salaries. The Business Roundtable also found Massachusetts employers are hiring more employees who live out-of-state.
