BRAINTREE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Volunteers were hard at work in Braintree Wednesday, lending a major helping hand to someone who's devoted years to aiding others.
Crystal Evans made national news a few years ago, when she jury-rigged her wheelchair with a shovel, to clear snow from sidewalks in South Braintree.
"I realized all I had to do is throw a shovel between my foot rests, and I could roll," Evans told WBZ's Kim Tunnicliffe. I could clear a path through the squares, down to the grocery stores, because I know there's a lot of elderly and disabled in this area that don't have cars, that needed the sidewalk access."
Now, the disability advocate is getting some needed help from the community. Evans has been homebound for weeks, because the narrow and rickety aluminum ramp she uses for her motorized wheelchair basically fell apart.
Members of the Braintree Rotary Club put up a new, sturdier and wider ramp Wednesday, donating their labor after raising money for the project.
"I can't imagine there being an issue with this ramp," said member Jay Nuss. The Rotary Club is helping out with kitchen and bath upgrades as well.
Evans is thrilled.
"To have them willing to help me, it takes one less thing off my plate."
