BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A portion of Centre St. in Jamaica Plain will be pedestrian-only this Sunday, July 10th, thanks to a new city program called Open Streets.

It's a similar concept to pedestrian-only days on Newbury Street in the Back Bay, allowing shoppers and diners to stroll along the roadway without the honking and din of traffic buzzing by.

Now that same concept is coming to Jamaica Plain, Roxbury and Dorchester throughout the summer.

"It's been a rough few years and I think people have not spent much time around each other. So this is just one of the many ways the city is bringing people back togetherm" City of Boston's Chief of Streets, Jascha Franklin-Hodge said.

Stores along Centre Street are gearing up with sidewalk sales and activities for the whole family.

"We've taken a break because of the pandemic, so we think this is a nice way to kind of get back into the groove of doing things where multiple stores, multiple businesses are involved at the same time," said Courtney, the manager of On Centre Gift Shop. "We're hoping it's kind of a return to normal, where we're doing these community wide events again," she said.

Cars will need to be removed from Centre Street from Jackson Square to South Street, by 1 a.m. Sunday morning. The roads will be blocked off with barricades from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
