PORTLAND, Maine (WBZ NewsRadio) — Several bystanders in downtown Portland, Maine say they saw a monkey running around the city's West End neighborhood this week.

One witness, Anna McMurchy, said on Facebook that she and a friend saw the monkey outside Tandem Coffee and Bakery, and that she first mistook it for a squirrel. After some googling, McMurchy says she thinks it was a baby Rhesus Macaque. Rhesus Macaques are commonly used in medical experiments, but are native to Asia.

Another bystander said they saw the monkey near Deering Oaks park. So far, there haven't been any photos of the elusive creature, according to the Bangor Daily News.

The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland said no one has contacted them about the monkey, but that they've seen the news coverage and social media posts.

WBZ NewsRadio has reached out to local animal control, and has not yet heard back.
