BOSTON (WBZNewsRadio) — The FBI is investigating after a package exploded at Northeastern University on Tuesday night, injuring a staff member.
The package was delivered to Holmes Hall and was detonated when a 45-year-old employee opened it just after 7 p.m. He was taken to the hospital with minor injuries to his hands.
Holmes Hall was evacuated and evening classes canceled, while multiple agencies including the Boston Bomb Squad, Boston police, Boston fire and Boston EMS arrived on scene to help with the investigation.
During a news conference Tuesday night, Boston Police confirm a second package was also found but was rendered safe by the bomb squad. Authorities stressed the campus was secure and there was no threat to the general public. NUPD will be increasing patrols and security across the campus, but the school is open and fully operational on Wednesday.
Officials did not reveal how the package was delivered or who it was intended for.
According to the Associated Press, investigators are trying to identify the motive behind the "Pelican-style" case shipment to Northeastern. Pelican cases are typically hard-shelled containers designed to protect fragile equipment like cameras or microphones. Alongside the package, the AP reports a rambling note was found, with language bashing virtual reality and referencing Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.
"I take very seriously that this city is home to everyone's young people...we want to make sure to emphasize that this is of the utmost priority, the safety and wellbeing of all of our young people here," Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said.
"We're monitoring the situation at Northeastern and we're ready to work with the university and our law enforcement partners on any prosecutions that may develop," Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said in a statement. "The quick and thorough response by Boston Police and other agencies is the start of a comprehensive investigation to determine exactly what occurred here."
Other colleges in the area were quick to remind students if you see something, say something.
Boston Police are now working with the Joint Terrorism Task Force to investigate and the FBI in Boston is offering it's full support in the investigation.
