BOSTON (WBZNewsRadio) - Nearly 3 Million people have hopped on a Bluebike this year, breaking previous records of annual ridership.
During the MBTA Orange Line and partial Green Line shutdowns, the program offered riders free 30-day passes and increased the fleet of 4,000 by 500 more bikes and immediately saw a boost in rides. Bluebikes says on the first day of the shutdown, the free membership passes were redeemed by almost 5,000 riders. By the end of the month, over 117,000 people had claimed the 30-day pass.
"I've been using it lately, on a daily basis pretty much." Boston resident Tam told WBZ's James Rojas as he hopped on a bike in the South End this morning. "When the orange line was shut down, I noticed there were no bikes on the racks, everybody's pretty much taking them but it's better now."
Bluebikes says before the shutdown, the single day trip record was 11,000 trips, but that record was smashed ten times during the 30 day period.
Ridership during the shutdown was through the roof! Bluebikes single day trip record was ~11,000 trips going into 2022. That record was smashed TEN TIMES during the shutdown.
As the month of Halloween descends on the Witch City with major road closures announced, Bluebikes is partnering with Salem to offer free 30-day passes to residents.
