WATERTOWN (WBZNewsRadio) - It could be quite a game changer for those who follow a strict regime of medications, taking doses once or multiple times a day. Lyndra Therapeutics, a biopharmaceutical company in Watertown, has created a technology that would allow patients to take their medications once a week or even once a month.
It's called LYNX and works by using time-release medication. The company describes the drug as looking like an asterix, with six arms coming out of a central hub, all folded neatly into a capsule. When the patient swallows the capsule, the outer layer disintegrates, releasing the arms free to deliver medication slowly in a time-release system.
Lyndra Therapeutics has tested the technology on 300 participants in their trial, with successful results. Their hope is to ease the pressure for patients who struggle with remembering to take their daily medication, such as those with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The company said the technology could also be used for any oral therapy such as heart medications, diabetes, antibiotics and even oral contraceptives.
