WEST BROOKFIELD, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - Police in West Brookfield have opened an investigation after offensive material targeting the Jewish community, were distributed around town.

Earlier this week, on August 8th, West Brookfield Police began getting a number of reports from residents who had gotten a zip lock bag filled with rice and what authorities call "offensive content."

"We understand that such actions can be deeply distressing and cause concerns among residents. While the content may be protected by free speech laws, we recognize the impact it can have on those affected." West Brookfield Police wrote in a statement. "We want to assure the community that we take this incident seriously. Our officers are available to provide support and address any concerns residents may have. We encourage community members to reach out to us if they encounter similar incidents or have information that could aid in our understanding of the situation."

"We value the diversity and unity within our community, and we stand against any form of discrimination or intimidation. We urge individuals to continue to support one another and foster an environment of respect and understanding. Our department is committed to working closely with local organizations and community leaders to ensure that all residents feel safe and valued." Police said.

Police said they're working with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) of New England and believe the materials were handed out by the Goyim Defense League (GDL), which authorities said "is recognized as a neo-Nazi extremist group."

According to the ADL, GDL aims to expel the Jewish community from the United States. With that goal in mind, the group encouraged antisemitic conspiracy theories with propaganda. Some of the lies spread by the group include recognizing the Holocaust as a "Jewish lie," the group also claims the Jewish community was responsible for the 9/11 terrorist attack on New York City.
