ATHOL, Mass. (WBZNewsRadio) - Authorities are investigating a deadly fire in Athol, that claimed the life of one person Thursday afternoon.

“On behalf of the Athol Fire Department, I want to express our heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family,” said Athol Fire Chief Guarnera. “This is a very sad day for them and our community.”

The fire began around 9:45 a.m. in a single family home in the area of 92 Fern Street. When firefighters arrived, the home was already fully engulfed in flames. Roughly 40 firefighters fought against the flames for about an hour before bringing it under control.

“The origin and cause of this fire remain under investigation, but preliminary evidence suggests that it started in the kitchen,” said State Fire Marshal Jon Davine. “I want to remind everyone to stay safe in the kitchen. Don’t leave food cooking unattended, and in the event of a fire on the stovetop use a lid of baking sheet to smother the flames. If you can’t put it out quickly, then get out, stay out, and call 9-1-1.”

The victim's name has yet to be released, however Town Manager Shaun Suhoski said the woman was a beloved member of the Athol community and very active in her church.
