Average Weekly Number Of New COVID-19 Cases In Mass. Declines

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The average weekly number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Massachusetts is on the decline, according to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.

The DPH reported another 3,022 confirmed cases of COVID-19 Wednesday, bringing the state's total number of confirmed cases to 484,693.

The state's seven-day average number of newly confirmed cases has dropped from around 6,200 (8.5 percent positive test rate) at the start of January to around 2,600 (4.6 percent positive test rate) on January 27th.

The state DPH also reported another 83 deaths among COVID-19 cases in Massachusetts, upping the state's confirmed coronavirus death toll to 14,013.

There have also been 291 deaths reported among probable cases of the virus in the state.

The estimated number of active cases of the virus in Massachusetts, signifying the number of patients with a confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis in the past 21 days, has fallen to 80,909.

There are currently 1,930 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 across the Commonwealth, 418 of whom are receiving intensive care.

According to Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Research Center, the U.S. has confirmed more than 25.5 million cases of COVID-19, and more than 427,000 Americans have died of the virus to date.
