Back Bay Architectural Commission Rejects Apple's Bollards Proposal

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Back Bay Architectural Commission has rejected a proposal to install bollards in front of the Apple Store on Boylston Street.

Apple made the request to the commission nearly one year after a man crashed into an Apple Store in Hingham, killing one person and injuring dozens. The driver is facing charges in connection with the deadly crash and has pleaded not guilty.

In the proposal, the company suggested installing a barrier of stainless steel bollards to protect the store and match its color scheme. The bollards are said to withstand a pickup truck traveling at 20 miles per hour.

Currently, the Boylston Street store has temporary barricades decorated with plants.

The commission said it wants Apple to come up with alternative designs.
