BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Boston Fire Department is investigating a fire that scorched through the old grandstand at Suffolk Downs, the building being a retired horse race track.

Officials say the fire quickly grew to a six alarm fire, burning in the roof area of the structure.

The BFD says that because the grandstand is not close to a large water supply, firefighters had to run hoses thousands of feet to the scene. The property is being redeveloped into a housing and lab space.

BFD Commissioner John Dempsey and fire officials used a drone to capture overhead pictures of the fire, which could provide thermal imaging.
