Boston Mayor Michelle Wu Unveils New Budget

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) -- Back to basics.

That’s how Boston Mayor Michelle Wu described the budget for her administration’s next fiscal year.

With a primary focus no longer on managing and funding the Covid-19 pandemic response, the mayor says this ‘First for Families Budget’ is more focused on the city’s residents, employees, and various city services.

"There were many things, because of the all-hands-on-deck emergency nature of the last few years, that didn’t get as much attention," Mayor Wu said. "Rather than just announcing new things, and certainly, there are some great news things here, the focus also has to be on doing what we already do well."

The proposed FY2024 operating budget of $4.28 billion funds all city services, including schools, public safety, housing supports, parks, senior centers, and street cleaning.

It also includes pay and benefits for the city’s 19,000-person workforce, a new pool in Charlestown, and new libraries in Codman Square, Fields Corner, and Egleston Square.
