BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A full year after the police killing of George Floyd, local officials and organizations are running events to mark the occasion.
Video footage of Floyd's murder in Minneapolis started a racial reckoning across the country last summer. Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of Floyd's murder last month.
At least two in-person events are being held in Boston to remember Floyd. The first, starting in Milton at 5:30 PM and ending at Walker Playground in Mattapan, is a "March for George and Justice" to commemorate Floyd, hosted by Dunk The Vote and the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit in Mattapan among others. State Rep. Brandy Fluker Oakley (D-Boston) will speak.
Around two miles away, a rally by "Mass Action 4 George Floyd" will take place at 6:00 PM near the main entrance to the Franklin Park Zoo. That rally is part of a nationwide set of rallies to commemorate Floyd, and organizers are also demanding justice for local people who have been killed by police. The families of Terrence Coleman, Usaamah Rahim, Juston Root, Eurie Stamps, Jr, and Burrell Ramsey will all be speaking at the rally, and will be demanding that officials reopen the cases of their loved ones and indict the officers involved.
Boston Acting Mayor Kim Janey is expected to speak on Floyd on Tuesday afternoon in a press conference.
