BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — It took years of prototypes and algorithms, but Boston-based tech startup Impact Biosystems has set a release date for their smart massager in May of this year.

Chief Executive Officer of Impact Biosystems Bridget Hunter-Jones said their handheld massager, named "Pact," can identify which muscles need treatment with a scan.

Hunter-Jones said the massager was designed to tailor to the user, similar to how a trainer can feel which muscles are the tightest on their patient.

"When the trainer goes in and touches for those tight spots and knots, they're able to feel a difference in the muscle stiffness because of their experience- but how can we actually measure that?" Hunter-Jones said.

According to the Pact website, the Pact Sense scans take less than 5 seconds to complete, after which the Pact Pulse "adapts the massaging treatment based on scans- to give a personalized recovery experience."
