BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Portions of downtown Boston's Congress Street is closing to pedestrians and traffic on Sunday to allow for demolition work to begin on the Government Center Parking Garage.
According to Boston city officials, work on the garage, located between Sudbury and New Chardon streets in the Financial District, is projected to last between July 11 up to Labor Day in September. Demolition resumes over the weekend after receiving the 'all-clear' signal from engineers, who put the project on pause in March when a partial collapse led to the death of a construction worker.
In the meantime, officials announced that Sudbury Street will add an extra lane to accommodate two-way traffic and alleviate potential traffic congestion.

WBZ's James Rojas spoke to neighbors of the demolition site who fear the sleepless nights ahead from possible overnight work.
"It wakes everybody up— I live right up top here, I know a lot of my neighbors get really annoyed. People have even tried sleeping out in the hallway, just to not be so close to this side of the building," said one resident near One Congress.
In June, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority had to suspend their Green and Orange Line services after officials found severe support column deterioration. Train service was restored when structural reinforcements were installed.
