BROCKTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — With less than a month before the Fourth of July, Brockton is cracking down on illegal fireworks.
The city is going after anyone who owns or sells illegal pyrotechnics, which city officials say have become a big problem.
"Last Fourth of July in the downtown section of the city, I got a call from the shift commander," said Brockton Fire Chief Brian Nardelli. "He said, 'It looks like a warzone down here with the amount of smoke.'"
Brockton Mayor Robert Sullivan has set up a task force to tackle the issue, which includes several police officers.
"We have four officers that work with our Fire Prevention Bureau," said Nardelli. "They go out [on] undisclosed nights of the week, usually on the weekends when people are home. They'll track down where there are illegal fireworks going on."
There is also a hotline that people can call to report illegal fireworks in their area: 508-941-0244.
