CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (WBZ News Radio) — Members of the Cambridge City Council want to take away their police department’s military equipment.
Councilor Quentin Zondervan says the Cambridge police have over a hundred rifles and shotguns, and a Bearcat armored vehicle.
A hearing on the equipment was held Wednesday night where members of the public weighed in. Cambridge’s Police Commissioner said the force needed the military style weapons.
Zondervand said the City Solicitor’s opinion is that the City Council cannot strip the police department of its military equipment by passing an ordinance.
“We have other means to get there, and we may choose to use them,” said Zondervand.
