BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Not one, but two tornadoes struck Cape Cod, the National Weather Service confirmed Wednesday afternoon.

The NWS said the widespread damage was caused by one tornado that touched down in the Barnstable and Yarmouth area from around 11:57 a.m. to 12:07 p.m. Tuesday, as well as a separate tornado that touched down in Harwich from around 12:10 to 12:15 p.m.

Both were rated as EF-1 on the Fujita Scale, with top wind speeds measured at around 110 mph.

The first tornado began as a waterspout that moved onshore just west of Kalmus—this was the tornado that ripped the roof off the Cape Sands Inn.

"Additional significant damage occurred just southwest of the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School, particularly along Hazelmoor Road from Violet Glen Road to Vine Brook Road," the NWS said. "Dozens of large trees were uprooted and a few were snapped off."

Minutes later, the second tornado, part of the same supercell storm that produced the first, touched down near Harwich Elementary School south of Parallel Street.

"At least 150 hardwood trees were either uprooted or snapped," the NWS said. "A few homes also had shingles that were ripped off."

The report went on to detail more wind damage that uprooted large trees in Chatham.
