CHATHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Beaches in Chatham are back open Tuesday, after seven Portuguese Man O'War were spotted in the water.

Town officials said on Monday, that the south side beaches between Harding's and Cockle Cove were closed for swimming after the jellyfish-like creatures were spotted.

The situation was then reevaluated on Tuesday morning. Officials said they walked Harding's Beach and there were no signs of the creatures.

The beaches are back open, but town officials say they will continue to monitor the situation.

According to NOAA's website, Man O'War tentacles can extend up to 100 feet and they're capable of paralyzing and killing small fish.

Although the sting is rarely deadly to people, it can still pack a powerful punch and cause welts on exposed skin.
