BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Former Boston City Councilor and community activist Chuck Turner has died at age 79.
Turner served on the Boston City Council for five terms after his election in 1999.
Throughout his career, he focused on racial equality and fought against gentrification and displacement.
He also became the first Boston City Councilor ever to be removed from the office after he was found guilty in 2010 of taking a $1,000 bribe.
In 2013, Turner received a $106,000 settlement from the city after a court decided the City Council went beyond its authority in removing him from office before he was sentenced in the case.
In a series of tweets Thursday, Mayor Marty Walsh called Turner "a staunch advocate for the people of Boston, who over the course of his lifetime helped to bring about so much good for our city."
