ORLEANS, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Coast Guard suspended the search for a missing small plane off of Cape Cod on Tuesday.

The single-engine Piper 28 was supposed to arrive at Chatham Municipal Airport on Sunday night.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Briana Carter said the Coast Guard, along with multiple other agencies, searched by air and by sea off the coast of Orleans for more than two straight days, covering over 2,000 square miles. The agencies were searching for the white-and-beige painted plane four miles east of Sampson Island.

They found no trace of the aircraft or the pilot.

"If any new information comes to light, then the search could be reinstated," Carter said.

Carter explained the last signal from the plane came from its transponder while it was still in the air. It was reported missing at around 10:00 PM Sunday night.

"We didn't begin searching until late at night so conditions weren't the best," she said.

The Piper 28 had one occupant, the man piloting the plane. He was flying in from Reading Regional Airport in Pennsylvania, according to the FAA. The pilot’s identity has not yet been released.
