Shoppers Scan Empty Shelves For Toilet Paper, Groceries

WESTWOOD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — With shoppers packing their pantries amid coronavirus concerns, long lines and empty shelves are what you can expect at your local grocery store.

Outside one store in Westwood, shoppers showed up early Friday hoping to stock up for essentials in case they had to be confined.

One mother of two told WBZ NewsRadio's Chris Fama the speed with which everything changed in the last two days caught her and her family by surprise.

"It came very quickly," she said. "At first, I was like, okay, we'll just get kind of ready. Now, with everything closing, I'm here to pick up the rest of the supplies we need for our home."

In her house, that means a lot of bread, canned foods, and things she can give to her children—as well as some treats.

For many, that also means toilet paper. Lots of stores don't have any, and other is running out, as supplies are low and demand is high.

"I have, right now, over 60 rolls," said one shopper. "Which, I normally have 50, so 60 is a little extra."

Another shopper said the growing COVID-19 concerns have caused her to change her shopping habits.

"I'm sanitizing more than I ever have," she said. "Before, I didn't. I will go in here and I will wipe the carriage, which, I never did before. I'll go home now, I'll change my clothes, and I'll wash these."
