SALEM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Essex County DA's office says a suspect has been arrested in a 33-year-old cold case murder in Lawrence.
The DA's office says the suspect is Marvin "Skip" McClendon — he was arrested in Alabama on Tuesday night. McClendon is accused of the fatal stabbing of then-11-year-old Melissa Ann Tremblay of Salem, N.H. in Lawrence more than 30 years ago.
Tremblay's body was found on the railroad tracks of the old Boston & Maine Railway Yard in Lawrence on September 12, 1988.
Officials said the man is a former Mass. Corrections Department employee, but did not discuss the specific evidence that led investigators to him. Though District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett did not know if he was an employee of the state at the time of the killing, he did say that the Department of Corrections helped in the investigation.
The D.A. said McClendon is in the custody of Cullman County, Alabama officials, and will be arraigned on Thursday.
