Founder Of Legal Sea Foods George Berkowitz Passes Away At 97

DEDHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The man who founded the seafood restaurant chain Legal Sea Foods has died at the age of 97.

George Berkowitz died in his sleep on February 20 in his retirement community home in Dedham, following a history of health complications, the Boston Globe reported.

According to the chain's website, Berkowitz founded Legal Sea Foods in 1950, neighboring his Russian immigrant father's meat market and grocery, Legal Cash Market in Inman Square, Cambridge. Customers at the Legal Cash Market were given "Legal Stamps" with their purchases, as "Legal" eventually became a mark of freshness for the restaurant chain.

In 2020, Legal Sea Foods was sold to PPX Hospitality Brands by Berkowitz's son, Roger Berkowitz who had taken over as CEO.
