FRANKLIN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The town clerk in Franklin has resigned after thousands of mail-in ballots were not counted after the polls closed the night of the primary.
State elections officials stepped in and added the ballots to the results and assured voters the mistake will not happen again on election night in November.
Secretary of the Commonwealth William Galvin said about three-thousand mail-in ballots had to be added to the primary vote tally.
"The old clerk made a decision to resign, obviously it was a very difficult situation we had down there in the primary," Galvin said.
However, the ballots did not change any of the previous outcomes from the races. This included the Fourth Congressional District race that had nine Democratic and four Republican candidates on the ballot.
"The two leading candidates in the Fourth Congressional District Democratic primary were satisfied with the result in the sense that they saw everything that was to be counted," Galvin said. "Obviously it was difficult for them to wait a couple additional days, when they shouldn't have had to."
Galvin said his office will assist Franklin with the vote in November.
