BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Massachusetts Fallen Heroes Foundation is partnering with the Cape Verdean Nurses Association and others to help remodel part of a Cape Verde hospital this week in honor of late Army Sgt. Alberto Montrond.
He was a Cape Verde native and Roxbury resident who was killed in the line of duty while serving in Afghanistan on Feb. 13, 2006.
The group, which also includes police, firefighters, carpenters and painters, will help renovate the children's wing of the hospital in Montrond's name. The Cape Verdean Nurses Association says they plan to put put up a plaque to honor Montrond once the renovations are complete.
Alector Tavares tells WBZ-TV that he's looking forward to traveling to the African Nation this Veteran's Day, "Being a veteran, point blank, we are brothers in arms regardless, that’s how the service works. So when you lose one, everybody hurts.”
Montrond's name has been added to the Mass Fallen Heroes Memorial in Boston.
