NORTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — As a worker shortage sweeps the United States in industries like air travel and retail, one woodworking business in Norton has hit a growth spurt and is finding they're going to have to take matters into their own hands to find some new hands.

South Shore Millwork crafts custom luxury wooden doors, cabinets, staircases, and frames for residential and corporate clients from the East coast to the West. The company typically services multi-million dollars homes, a far cry from the company's beginnings, when it was an operation out of Owner Jeff Burton's garage.

WBZ's Kim Tunnicliffe asked Burton how the national worker shortage is affecting the business inside SSM's workshop, among the whirring and spinning blades.

"We could use people in every department: engineers, project managers, finish people. If we found the right people, we would hire ten to fifteen tomorrow," Burton said.

Burton says the company will be holding a job fair on Saturday, June 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the facility on 7 Maple Street in Norton.

"We can be an intimidating company— we put a sign out and an advertisement in the paper, but young people who don't have any experience, anyone that doesn't have experience would be reluctant to walk through the front door. This is an opportunity for them to come in with no pressure, and see if it's something they might like to take up or do," Burton said.
