BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) – The MBTA said the latest spur of the Green Line Extension (GLX) will be ready for passengers in March.

The new Lechmere station has a hovering view of the old Lechmere station, which opened 100 years ago. With only a few more steps before it opens, MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak said the GLX has been a longtime coming.

“[It was a] project that was frankly dead,” he said. “[It] has been brought back.”

The GLX will extend the northern end of Green Line from Lechmere to Union Square in Somerville as well as College Avenue in Medford. The project is intended to provide service in areas that historically have not had access to public transit like the T.

“By supporting an increased ridership of more than 50,000 trips per day, this project will significantly reduce vehicle emissions on the road,” the MBTA wrote on their website.

The new Lechmere station will be accompanied by some 24 new Green Line trains, all equipped with digital consoles for operators. The MBTA still needs to conduct a few more safety tests and installments before the station opens to the public.

“It’s Real; It’s coming,” Poftak said. “We’re really excited."
