LINCOLN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Celebrating 'Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day," Lincoln students are pedaling further by extending their school biking commutes to cover the whole week.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation says that the official WBRTS Day on Wednesday promotes a safe, healthy, and active lifestyle as families and students ride to school, all while cutting down on gas emissions.

WBZ's James Rojas spoke with Ginger Reiner of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, who says bicyclists are showing up in droves to Lincoln Public Schools.

"You see about 75 bicycles completely overfilling the bike racks here, leaning up against buildings and laying on the grass. This is about triple what we normally have on a nice day for Lincoln schools- and it's a drizzly morning," Reiner said.

Earlier in the year the state observed "Winter Walk & Roll to School Day" in February, while another WBRTS Day is set to be held in the fall.

MassDOT's Massachusetts Safe Routes to School Program says that walking and biking to school is a sustainable activity and transportation option for students, families, and communities.

"It makes me really happy, getting cars off the road, getting kids outside, getting them active really gives me hope for the future that we'll be able to do this on a larger scale," said John Mendelson of the BPAC and father of two students at Lincoln schools.

"Building the muscle memory both physically and mentally is something that we're hoping to encourage by doing a bike to school week, five straight days, and the kids try it and they like it, they'll keep doing it," Mendelson said.
