Mass. COVID-19 Hospital Bed Capacity Tightens Two Weeks After Christmas

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported another 7,110 confirmed cases of COVID-19 Saturday, bringing the state's total number of confirmed cases to 407,933.

There are estimated to be close to 89,000 active cases of coronavirus throughout the Commonwealth, public health officials said.

The DPH also reported another 90 deaths among COVID-19 cases in Massachusetts, upping the state's confirmed coronavirus death toll to 12,798.

The weekly average number of COVID-19 patients hospitalized in the Commonwealth has been steadily climbing since the start of the year, tightening hospital bed capacity across the state.

As of Friday, which marked two weeks since Christmas, the DPH said nearly 88 percent of all medical/surgical beds in Massachusetts are currently occupied, and almost 80 percent of the state's ICU beds are occupied.

There are currently 2,291 COVID-patients hospitalized with the virus in Massachusetts, 440 are receiving intensive care, and 280 are intubated.

The state DPH said the seven-day average rate of positive coronavirus tests has dropped slightly since the start of the month to 7.35 percent.

According to Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Research Center, the U.S. has confirmed more than 22 million cases of COVID-19, and almost 371,000 Americans have died of the virus to date.
