BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A spike in Covid-19 cases and hospitalization has created concerns in the Commonwealth, with the Department of Public Health recording numbers not seen since last January.

The latest Covid data showed an additional 5,403 new covid infections reported on Wednesday. This is the most cases reported in a single-day, in the state, since the start of the year.

Right now, the state's seven-day average positivity rate is at 4.99 percent. Back on November first, the rate was around 1.75 percent.

Along with the jump in cases, comes a jump in hospitalizations in the state. On Wednesday, the state reported 1,204 people in the hospital with Covid-19.

This is an increase of 140-percent since last month. Currently, 252 of those people are in the Intensive Care Unit and 65 percent of patients are said to be unvaccinated.

The state recorded an additional 12 deaths on Wednesday which brings the total in the state to 19,163.

Some health experts say the jump in cases is not too surprising because more people are staying inside because of the colder weather and cases of the new omicron variant are spreading across the country.
