BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The bragging rights among the four major U.S. college men's hockey teams in the Boston area gets underway tonight at the TD Garden.

Puck drop for the Beanpot's early game is 5 p.m. between Northeastern and Harvard.

Then at 8 p.m. it's the #1 team in the nation Boston College going up against the #3 team Boston University.

The finals are one week from Monday on Feb. 12.

The Beanpot is a local tradition played now for 71 years that may not have the mass popularity outside the state that the professional teams enjoy, but the Beanpot appeals to the hardcore, passionate Bay State sports fans who love their hockey.

Carl is super-excited to take his grandson to the game tonight driving into town via the Sagamore Bridge. "My grandson is such a big hockey fan. We're coming in from Cape Cod."

Another fan said no matter the outcome of the games, she can't wait. " These games have been going on forever," she said. " They are such a huge Boston tradition."

Last week in the women's Beanpot Tournament Northeastern beat BU in overtime 2-1.
