NORTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Norton Police Department and community are mourning the loss of an officer who has passed away after fighting Covid-19 for weeks.
The department announced the passing of Detective Sergeant Stephen Desfosses through social media on Wednesday night.
Norton Police Chief Brian Clark said it was a sad day for the community, adding that the Town of Norton lost a "great and dedicated Officer and friend, Dad and husband."
Detective Sgt. Desfosses was admitted to the hospital the week before Christmas. He spent several weeks in the ICU battling the virus, influenza and pneumonia.
According to a GoFundMe page set up for his family, his wife Jessica said, "this pain is indescribable, I had to shatter my girls’ world today. I think that hurts almost more than the loss itself."
She added that the "amazing" support from the community has helped her and their children continue on, and will "eventually get [them] through to the other side of this tragedy."
As of Thursday morning, the page has raised over a hundred thousand dollars.
Desfosses worked for the department for 30 years.
