BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Authorities say a white supremacist group marched through downtown Boston on Saturday, something city officials are denouncing on social media.

The group walked through the Freedom Trail and other areas of the city, as videos and photos shared online show the white-masked individuals carrying flags and shields along the streets. The Boston Police Department told WBZ NewsRadio in a statement that they were aware of the group's presence in the city, and say they have since left the area without incident.

The group carried flags with the symbol of a fasces, akin to a white supremacist group known as "Patriot Front," as City Council President Ed Flynn addressed their demonstration in a public statement.

Flynn went on to say that neo-Nazis have made similar displays in Boston previously, with their most recent appearance in March at the Saint Patrick's Day Parade. Flynn also mentioned that 31 Patriot Front members were arrested in Idaho last month for rioting at a LGBTQ+ Pride Month event there.

"It is incumbent upon all of us to acknowledge, call out, and disavow the growing extremism and creeping hate in our country wherever we see it," Flynn said.

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu also made a public statement on Twitter, criticizing the group for hiding their faces.
