Peaceful Protest At UMass Amherst Turns Destructive

AMHERST, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) – A protest held outside a fraternity in Amherst on Sunday afternoon turned destructive.

Approximately 300 people showed up outside the Theta Chi Fraternity house on North Pleasant Street in Amherst. They were protesting sexual assault allegations at parties the fraternity has been hosting on campus.

Eventually, mobs of people tried breaking into the house, threw objects at the building and started damaging cars in the fraternity’s parking lot.

One fraternity resident was struck in the head with a bottle thrown by a protestor.

The residents of the house called police just before 12:15 p.m. The crowd quickly dispersed after police arrived at the scene.

No arrests were made, and Amherst Police are continuing to investigate.
