BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The man behind WBZ-TV's Phantom Gourmet is apologizing for dozens of his social media posts that mocked the global protests calling for racial equality.
David Andelman, CEO of Phantom Gourmet and co-owner of Mendon Twin Drive-In Movie Theater, issued an apology on Facebook on Saturday, after screenshots of his controversial comments went viral online.
"I want to apologize. I maintain my own Facebook Page," said Andelman, after WBZ-TV received complaints about his public comments over the weekend. "I made comments on that page that were inappropriate, hurtful, and wrong regarding the Boston protests."
By Sunday morning, Andelman had made his Facebook profile private. However pictures compiling many of his comments, which spanned almost two weeks, were already circulating widely.
"We don't take a knee here," said one of his initial posts. "This is America, not Game of Thrones. Your desperate need for approval, from those who hate cops and country regardless, is pathetic. Have a great day!"
Another post by Andelman said "Maybe Back Bay restaurants and retailers could offer touchless, curbside looting, and gyms could call workouts 'protests against obesity.'"
On June 4th, Andelman also said he "stands with Drew Brees." A day earlier, the NFL player had drawn backlash for his own comment saying he will "never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America."
Brees later apologized for his stance, saying through his ongoing conversations, he realized "this is not an issue about the American flag. It has never been. We can no longer use the flag to turn people away or distract them from the real issues that face our black communities."
In his apology on Sunday, Andelman said he too stands for racial and social justice, which he said is reflected in his "record of philanthropy and business."
