BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston Acting Mayor Kim Janey announced a pilot program Monday that would bring free rides on the busiest bus route in the city.

The MBTA’s Route 28 bus carries nearly 13,000 people each work day, and more than two-thirds of the riders are considered low income. The route starts in Mattapan, and ends at Northeastern University.

The pilot program will start on August 29, and will last for three months.

“This pilot will measure the impact of free fares on ridership along the 28 bus route,” Janey said. “It will provide direct benefits to communities that historically have been disenfranchised by the lack of rapid transit.”

The city of Boston is investing $500,000 in a partnership with the MBTA.
