SAUGUS, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Saugus police say they received hundreds of calls last night starting around 8:30 of a ‘big boom’ people heard in and around Saugus.

Turns out the noise came from a turbine malfunction at the WIN Waste Innovations power plant.

The plant generates enough electricity for about 16,800 Massachusetts homes as well as its own operations.

Some of the residents compared the sound to the roar of a jet engine going on for 20 minutes.

Saugus firefighters said they had to stay in their vehicles to hear their radios.

Plant officials said they were able to fix the problem.
